Dr. Mitchel Seruya was our speaker for the June Keynote Webinar presentation. This webinar began with a review of the differential diagnosis of foot drop, with a particular focus on zones of injury involving the lumbar spine, sciatic nerve, and common peroneal nerve. Reasons behind the limited spontaneous recovery as well as historically poor outcomes with nerve reconstruction were also discussed. Based on an understanding on why past nerve techniques have failed, a set of surgical principles were introduced to optimize functional outcomes. Detailed illustrations of the branching anatomy of the peroneal target and tibial donor nerves were provided, with specific application to nerve transfer reconstruction.
