LIC are constantly striving to improve the genetic merit of New Zealand dairy cows, and liquid sexed semen enables this by using the very best pool of genes for reproduction. The process begins by collecting semen from the bulls and taking these samples back to the lab to be examined. Using specialist expertise and sexing technology, sperm of the highest quality, possessing the most favourable traits are extracted and then implanted into the cows. Although the frozen format of bull sperm has dominated the market for the last 10 years, it is often unsuitable due to the extended time taken to achieve conception using the product. This is undesirable because by the time cows fall pregnant, calving is out of season, whereas liquid semen achieves conception with greater success, only seeing a 2-3% drop in conception compared to 15% in the frozen format.
