In this video, we take a look at the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate, a Japanese late-World War II fighter aircraft that, arguably, was their best fighter and, arguably, was better than any allied fighter at the time, including the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt. We first talk, though, about aircraft naming, and how and why the allies gave nicknames (or reporting names) to Japanese aircraft. We then talk about the early stages of the Pacific War, how Japan had the advantage, and how they wanted to maintain that advantage. We talk about the initial effort to improve upon the Nakajima Ki-43 "Army Zero", and how its successor would be unlike most other Japanese fighters at the time. We talk about the initial excellent performance of the Ki-84 prototypes, how its eventual production was delayed, its early combat experience over in China, and its move to the Philippines to defend against the advancing allied forces. We talk about how it was, technically, a fighter that was equal to, if not better, than most allied fighters, and how that didn't materialize due to late war roadblocks. We end by talking about how, if introduced earlier, the Ki-84 could have been a real game-changer or a sort-of superplane.
