Todd Green is an associate professor of religion at Luther College, where he has served on the faculty since 2008. He is also the interim director for Luther College's Center for Ethics and Public Engagement. Green’s research focuses on Islamophobia in the United States and Europe. His first book on the topic, The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West (Fortress Press, 2015), was cited in 2018 in an amicus curiae brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court by the NAACP, the National Urban League, and other civil rights organizations. The brief argued in favor of blocking President Trump’s executive order banning entry in the United States from select Muslim-majority countries. In addition to his written scholarship, Green has worked as an advisor on Islamophobia in Europe at the U.S. State Department, and he has spoken on the topic with other government audiences, including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. His views on Islamophobia have also been featured on a variety of media outlets, including CNN, The Washington Post, and Al Jazeera. In Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn’t Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism (Fortress Press, 2018), Green argues that asking Muslims to condemn terrorist attacks is a distraction that prevents majority populations in the United States and Europe both from facing their own violent histories and from asking critical questions about how their countries’ national security initiatives and foreign policies contribute to a violent world order. The book also presents an interfaith framework to help non-Muslims engage with their Muslims neighbors in ways that do not depend on narratives of violence and counterterrorism.
