Chulalongkorn Hospital's Sleep Center has successfully performed surgery for sleep apnea patients using a new technique called HGNS. This makes it the first hospital in Thailand and the fourth in Asia to offer this innovative treatment. The surgery helps patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea, a condition where breathing stops during sleep due to airway obstruction. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in Thailand, with research showing an increase in sleep-related issues. It can affect your overall health and well-being, and if left untreated, it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, and sexual dysfunction. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may require behavioral changes, while severe cases may involve surgery. The Sleep Center at Chulalongkorn Hospital has been dedicated to improving sleep health and has introduced the HGNS technique to treat sleep apnea patients. Dr. Nuchara Jirakarnwasan, head of the Sleep Center and president of the Thai Sleep Society, explains that sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway is blocked, causing oxygen levels to drop or leading to intermittent breathing. Risk factors include abnormal skeletal structure, obesity, long and narrow noses, and certain medical conditions. Men are more prone to sleep apnea due to the protective effect of female hormones on the airway. Symptoms include snoring, frequent nighttime awakenings, and daytime sleepiness. Treatment options include behavioral changes, using positive airway pressure devices, and surgery. The Sleep Center has been using the HGNS technique since July 2015, making it the first hospital in Thailand to do so. HGNS surgery involves stimulating the 12th cranial nerve, which controls the genioglossus muscle that helps expand the airway. It is a minimally invasive procedure with good long-term adjustability. However, it is more expensive due to imported equipment. The Sleep Center treats various sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep-related behavioral disorders. It offers clinics for sleep disorders and CPAP treatment, where patients can try and receive devices without cost. There is also a specialized clinic for respiratory muscle training, which is the first of its kind in Thailand, designed for patients with sleep apnea who cannot use CPAP devices. Sleep is essential for physical and mental restoration, so it's important to prioritize quality and quantity. If you notice any abnormal sleep patterns, consider adjusting your habits first. If symptoms persist, seek professional advice from a sleep specialist.
