Today we are going to talk about an unassuming but very special character in our tool box that everyone who works on Japanese bikes should know about and have. The infamous JIS screwdriver. I know… Flat head, Phillips, Hex, Allen, Torx and now JIS, what gives? If you’ve never heard of them you’re not alone. JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standard, and every screw on every Japanese designed motorcycle from the 50’s right up to the bikes in the showroom now were manufactured with a unique JIS screw head design. And it’s not limited to Motorcycles. All manner of Japanese equipment uses JIS fasteners from RC vehicles and electronics to bicycle components. Now I know you’re thinking, “Whatever, Bro! I use regular Phillips screwdrivers all the time!” And even though your standard Phillips head screwdriver will “work” with JIS screw heads, the fit is imperfect. Aside from slight size variation, Philips head drivers have a longer sharper point that will not allow the tip to seat fully into the screw head slot preventing you from achieving maximum contact with the drive walls. Sure you can probably back that screw out with the wrong tool, but what about the next time, or the next. And what about the poor schmuck you eventually sell that pile of worked over screws to? Eventually the extra slop means ruined screw heads which can lead to further, uh we’ll call them frustrations. Most of you know, here at Dime City we prefer to do things right, not twice. That’s why we carry this set of three high quality JIS Screwdrivers. These sweet drivers feel really nice in the hand and have a 57 degree point with a flat tip and parallel wings. This helps grip the screw and fit snugly ensuring precise contact which goes a long way in removing that stubborn, possibly decades old screw with no damage. The construction is “Full Tang”, which means that they are a one piece shaft from tip to tip and feature a hex bolster end which make them super sturdy. Everybody knows, Full Tang Clan ain’t nothing to f… mess with. That’s why they have a lifetime guarantee! Each set contains three sizes, a #1, #2 and #3. You’re #1 has a 75mm shaft and is perfect for those little screws on your bike, like the ones on the handlebar switches or other electronics. The #2 has a 100mm shaft and is probably the most versatile. Perfect for things like carb screws. And this bad boy, the #3 has a 150mm shaft and fits all those larger screws like those found on the engine cases and bodywork.
