Join Ella and Neve as they show you how to do a wheelbarrow walk! In paediatric occupational therapy, wheelbarrow walks are one of our most favourite activities! Wheelbarrow walks are fantastic for helping children build core strength, upper limb stability, and hand strength. They can also be extremely effective as a sensory diet activity, as they offer lots of deep pressure proprioceptive input which can be very calming to a child's nervous system! As the parent or caregiver, you can support your child in several different areas, depending on their strength. You can hold them at their hips, thighs, or ankles (it gets progressively more difficult as you move towards the ankles). You do want to make sure your child's back is fairly straight, and they aren't sagging their tummy toward the ground. Look for the "just-right challenge" for your child - it shouldn't be so hard that they can't do it, but challenging enough that they are working! Ella and Neve came up with a fun challenge: putting a stuffed toy on your back, balancing with it all the way to the end, and throwing it in a target. You and your child can work your way up to this, because it certainly is a challenge!! #sensorydiet #proprioception #heavywork ------------------- For other ideas on sensory diet and movement activities, check out the rest of our MoveAbout Activity Card playlist: https://bit.ly/2WAwftG To purchase the MoveAbout Activity Cards, click this link: https://rb.gy/ecqolg ------------------- We acknowledge that every child and environment is unique, so we would like to emphasize that these videos are not a stand alone occupational therapy program. A sensory diet is a tool that is best used with supervision from a trained occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant. If you have concerns regarding your child’s motor, cognitive, emotional and/or sensory development, please consult your child’s doctor or allied health professional. -------------------- Follow us on our social media channels or check out our website: Instagram: / moveabout.ot Facebook: / moveabouttherapy Find us on our website at: http://www.moveabout.com.au Please click to subscribe for more fun videos that are released weekly!
