Max Cooper - The Sun In A Box (Official video by Andy Lomas)

“I want to hold the Sun in a box” - an anonymous phrase that set me off musically and visually wondering what it could sound and look like. It’s the first part of a new project on the way very soon. ► Tour dates: https://www.maxcooper.net/event ► Subscribe to channel: @maxcoopermax ► Sign up to Max’s mailer: https://os.fan/MaxCooper/SignUp ► Listen to ‘The Sun In A Box’: https://ffm.to/on_being_ Max Cooper: Many thanks to all of you who submitted your thoughts to my website over the last couple of years, there’s so much to share from a sort of collective psyche of inner thoughts. The quote “I want to hold The Sun In A Box”, made me think of a sunrise festival experience, with beautiful wandering slow techno with simplicity, playfulness and experimentations, and a long build of tension, with the box eventually opened to an explosion of light. That might sound abstract but I think you’ll hear what I mean in the music if you have a few minutes to let it make its effect. I wanted to play on the same themes of emergence of light for the video, and was lucky to work with one of my biggest inspirations, artistically and technically, Andy Lomas. He designed and coded a mathematical model of chemotaxis, where simulated cells respond to chemical factors to move in complex arrangements, beginning with the box, through life-like form, and peaking with the audio synced chaos of a shedding sun. Thanks for having a look/listen. Andy Lomas: This work was inspired by Prof. Kees Weijer's pioneering studies into a type of social amoeba (Dictyostelium discoideum) that uses chemical messages to organise into surprisingly complex colonies, often with hundreds of thousands of cells working together. When there is plenty of food the amoebae hunt as individual cells, but as food runs out they start to emit chemical signals that attract others, and they group together into large slug-like forms. This allows them to all move together as a colony to search for a new source of food. I have been experimenting with the basic idea of cells that are affected by chemicals but also self-generate those chemicals. What I've been finding is an incredibly wide range of evocative dynamic forms, from simple structures where cells appear to follow each other in geometrical arrangements, to things that look surprisingly like simulations of fluid dynamics and large complex pulsating organic structures. This might not sound like an obvious system to use to accompany a track called 'Sun in a Box', but Max saw some of this work and commented that some of the tests almost look like stars emitting solar flares. I've been using this video as an opportunity to explore the range for forms that can be produced, and how to choreograph transitions between structures. I've been guided by the idea of main sequence star formation and how most of the atomic elements needed for life are generated inside stars. We start with a box: a dense universe full of subatomic particles that need to collect together to form the first atoms of Hydrogen and Helium. These then collect together to form the first star, with a burst of light and the creation of heavier elements that allow more complex structures and life to form. These elements then collect together into yet another star, forming a cycle of star formation and generation of even heavier elements and complex structures. There are 13.4 million simulated cells all working together in these simulations. A choreographed performance using digital social amoebae.
