You might have wondered why there is an air tank in heavy vehicles? Do you know what they are? They are used to store air which helps in braking. In this video, we have explained what a Pneumatic braking system is, its components, how it works, its advantages and disadvantages. The system which achieves braking action with the help of air is known as Pneumatic Braking System. This technique has been used in automobiles since the 20th century. They are usually employed in heavy vehicles because of their capability of generating high braking force. An engine-driven compressor draws air from the atmosphere and compresses it. The compressed air is sent to the reservoir through the unloader valve which regulates the air pressure. The driver operated brake pedal is in connection with the brake valve which allows the air from the compressor to reach individual brake chambers. The compressed air actuates the cam which moves the brake shoes. The brake shoes get pressed against the brake drum and because of the friction created, the vehicle stops. The advantages of the pneumatic braking system are less effort requirement, braking can be achieved in less distance and it is easy to attach and detach. The disadvantages include noisy operation, high cost of maintenance and there is a possibility of leakages.
