How I use "dummy clips" in Session view within Ableton Live to switch on / off instruments and select between instruments in an Instrument Rack. The dummy clip sends automation to the devices so that you can be sure when you launch the clip, that the instrument will change to what you have specified (which is a little easier than turning a knob and hoping). In the video I'm showing how **I** do it (other ways are always available). In the Ableton Instrument Rack I set up three chains with different instruments on each, then use the Chain Selection feature to choose which to play. In my example I've been a bit "messy" - if you don't want the instruments to overlap / sound at the same time, then the chains shouldn't overlap. Otherwise you can set up the ranges to overlap and even crossfade between instruments at each end if you like. You'll also see how I use the Mapping specification to make sure that any instruments that aren't being used in the rack are switched OFF. This should protect your CPU usage... The dummy clips are designed to play once and stop, and since they ONLY send the "patch change" / device ON/OFF then you can make them as short as you like. When you then perform, you will want to record MIDI into a new clip in that track. --o0o-- I'm writing a book on HOW TO MAKE GENERATIVE MUSIC WITH ABLETON LIVE SUITE.
