Promising Supplements for Anxiety

Anxiety is something that many people struggle with. For some it is situational – stressful circumstances in life are producing anxious feelings; for others, anxiety is a symptom of chronic illness, just as real as joint pain or fatigue. Whatever the cause, anxiety is uncomfortable at best, and can be totally debilitating at worst. I have used some natural options with my patients to help with anxiety that I wanted to share with you. The first one I love is called 200mg of Zen by Allergy Research Group, and the name is pretty fitting! 200mg of Zen contains GABA and theanine. GABA is one of our calming brain chemicals aka neurotransmitters, and theanine is an amino acid that promotes calm and relaxation. I have used this supplement for years with my patients with great results. The second is a newer product by Researched Nutritionals (one of my very favorite supplement companies because of how well they research their products, and how well they combine ingredients to make powerful and effective formulas), called AnxiaEase. AnxiaEase works slightly differently to 200mg of Zen, as it does not contain GABA or theanine. It contains adaptogenic herbs such as ashwaghanda and holy basil to support the stress response, nutrients such as B6 and magnesium, calming herbs such as lavender, lemon balm and passion flower as well as specific probiotic strains to support the gut-brain axis. I have found these two formulas to be powerful in and of themselves, and also synergistic when used together. In fact, I talked to a patient today who is doing one dose of each daily, and she told me that she has had relief from anxiety and intrusive thoughts that she hasn’t had since at least her teenage years, perhaps her childhood. She is sleeping well and her biggest challenge now is learning who she is without her anxiety – perhaps also not a straight-forward journey, but surely a better one than trying to figure out how to navigate each day with it. I have other patients who do one dose of each twice daily (1 capsule of the 200mg of Zen twice daily, 2 capsules of AnxiaEase twice daily). Of course, consult your health care professional to see how these might work in with your current medication and supplement regimen. Anxiety is horrible. I’m not promising that these supplements will magically make it go away, but I’ve seen enough good results to feel comfortable sharing with you that they’re a solid option (and so much safer than some of the medications on the market currently).
