(19 Jun 1995) English/Nat Mother Teresa spoke out against abortion Monday at the opening of a home for infant children in Washington DC, which is to be run by her Missionaries of Charities. At the inaugural ceremony, attended by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Nobel Laureate said women who have abortions destroy the presence of Jesus in their hearts. This is the fourth home opened by Mother Teresa's order in the Washington area. This latest facility is a shelter for newborns and toddlers awaiting adoption or fostering. The aim is to provide support and an alternative to abortion. In her speech, Mother Teresa condemned what she termed the evil of terminating pregnancy. SOUNDBITE: "That is why abortion has created a great evil. In killing the child, in aborting the child, we really... if we remember that we are doing it to Jesus... Jesus said what ever you do to others, you do to me. So the mother herself destroys the presence of Jesus in her heart, by destroying the child." SUPER CAPTION: Mother Teresa of Calcutta The opening of the shelter was warmly welcomed by America's First Lady. She said it was just the sort of first class facility needed and expected in the US. SOUNDBITE: "And you can know in the gut of your soul whether or not you would leave your own child there, that is the test for every single facility that we have for an child in America. I call it the Chelsea Test." SUPER CAPTION: US First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton Clinton also called for more people to adopt children. There are some 400-thousand children in orphanages across the United States.
