Scale Model Challenge 2024 in Veldhoven

In den vergangenen Monaten habe ich wirklich keine Kosten und Mühen gescheut, um einige der prestigeträchtigsten Veranstaltungen, die der Modellbau so zu bieten hat, zu besuchen. Nach Telford, Moson und den IPMS Nationals habe ich mich nach Veldhoven in den Niederlanden aufgemacht, um dort die Scale Model Challenge zu besuchen. Ich war bereits 2022 vor Ort, als dort die World Model Expo gastierte, eine reguläre SMC hatte ich bisher noch nicht selbst miterlebt. Trotz der hohen Erwartungen war ich als Besucher dennoch etwas überfordert mit der gigantischen Menge an Wettbewerbsmodellen und dem großen Händlerbereich. Hier kommt man selbst als Ausstellungs-Veteran an seine Grenzen! Es ist tatsächlich unmöglich, alles direkt vor Ort innerhalb von zwei Tagen zu verdauen, was eigentlich schade ist. Eine Veranstaltung dieser Größenordnung müsste mindestens drei Tage dauern, damit man als Besucher die Chance hat, sich alles anzusehen und entsprechend zu würdigen. Im Wettbewerbsbereich ging es natürlich eng zu. Man hatte Schwierigkeiten zu einzelnen Tischen überhaupt durchzudringen und Photos von den gezeigten Werken zu machen. Am Ende wurde man aber mit tollen Eindrücken und viel Inspiration beim Betrachten der Meisterwerke entlohnt. Besonders schön fand ich, dass neben dem sehr starken Wettbewerb auch ein Ausstellungsbereich für die Clubs zur Verfügung stand. Auch hier gab es hochkarätigen Modellbau zu bestaunen und der soziale Aspekt kam natürlich auch nicht zu kurz. Ich halte das für eine gelungene Kombination, obwohl mir eine reine Club-Ausstellung nach wie vor am liebsten ist. After Telford, Moson and the IPMS Nationals i went this time to Veldhoven in the Netherlands to visit the Scale Model Challenge. I was there in 2022 already when the World Model Expo was held there, but until now i had not the chance to visit a regular SMC event yet. Despite my high expectations i was a bit overstrained by the gigantic number of contest entries and the huge vendor area. Even a model show veteran like myself has troubles deal with that! It is actually impossible to take it all in within two days, which is a shame. A show of this size and prestige should last three days at least, so the visitor has even a chance to look at it all and appreciate it. Things were tight inside the contest area. It was difficult to even reach some of the tables and take photos of the work on display there. In the end the effort and patience payed off, i gathered a lot of nice impressions and inspiration just by looking at those masterpieces. I appreciated it in particular, that there was a sizable model club area in addition to the contest area. There was a lot of top notch work to admire as well and the social aspect was fairly pronounced. I think that is a good combination of both worlds, although i still prefer a pure club-based show.
