A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL FOR SPEECH DISORDER CLUTTERING IS ON THE WAY: AN INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT YARUSS

Dr. Scott Yaruss is a scientist and a mastodont in speech pathology. In this video he talks about a new research project: the OASEC, a tool developed for speech-language pathologists to feel more comfortable in diagnosing and treating fluency disorder cluttering. The OASEC is different in that it zooms in on the EXPERIENCES of people who clutter and the IMPACT that their #clutteringspeech has on their lives. This is particularly interesting because researchers and clinicians have, for a long time, (incorrectly) assumed that people who clutter just aren't aware of what's going on in their speech. In fact, they're not clueless about their speech differences at all. The OASEC (now in development) documents and measures what it is that people who clutter experience in their lives. It is a mean to understand from a clinical point of view how we can help to diminish the adverse impact. But also from a personal point of view. This is especially important because cluttering is widely misunderstood. Ultimately the OASEC might be helpful in designing treatment for people who clutter and relieving the burden that they experience in their daily lives. #oasec #oasis
