“The Whole Damm Family” by Billy Murray 1909 Billy Murray recorded this song three times for Victor. The original was recorded in 1905 and was very popular. Another was made in 1906 both recorded in Philadelphia. This version was recorded in 1909 in Camden I assume because a new version was needed to make more copies available. Just a guess. I first heard this song a decade or more ago at the home of some phonograph friends of mine. They had a poster and the original 1905 record in one of their rooms. The story and the poster was really fun. I always wanted the poster and did eventually find one. I also found a plate meant for display that has a green background and the Dam family images and names on it. I have since sold that to another collector, but he sent me an image of it and I included it in the video. The Dam (or Damm) family post cards and posters were made for decades after this record came out. I have copies going at least up to the 1940s and perhaps even early 1950s. Amazing for images described first in a record from 1905. I have a 1905 copy of the record but it is in really pretty bad shape and would not transfer well enough to make a good recording. This 1909 copy is pretty worn and has a lot of hiss, but overall worked to make a pretty good transfer. I tried 3 different stylus sizes before finally settling on a 2.5 mil stylus. That surprised me. The 3 mil cartridge which I use for most 78 rpm records made of noise from ware especially in the opening grooves. So, I tried a 4 mil cartridge and it was even worse. I have no idea how the 2.5 worked better but can only surmise the lower portion of the grooves are less worn than the top part. I have no idea really.
