With Mayawati's BSP in terminal decline, whom should the Dalits vote for?

With five losses on the trot in UP, BSP and its leader Mayawati seem to be a spent force. In the 2022 UP Assembly polls, Muslims, OBCs and even non-dominant Dalit castes deserted her, with the result that BSP’s vote percentage went below the crucial 15% mark. The fear is that Mayawati may not be able to regain the critical support base that propelled her to the CM’s post four times since 1995. Since 2012, it’s been a continuous period of decline for the party. With her penchant for constructing her own statues alongside those of other Dalit greats, and accepting huge cash donations, Mayawati was no longer the ‘Dalit Ki Beti’ in popular public opinion. She also got enmeshed in several corruption cases over large infrastructure projects. So, for the 22% Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh, the dilemma is clear: Should they vote for other parties like the BJP or Samajwadi Party, or should they wait for another Dalit formation to emerge before switching loyalties?
