The articulation of the human wrist has 3 degrees of freedom, and allows a range of motion approaching 270 degrees in rotation. This limitation may be overcome with the robotic endoscopic instruments used in minimally invasive surgery. Using the robotic platform, all instruments are wristed with 7 degrees of freedom, allowing 360 degrees of rotation. Such advances allow the surgeon to complete complex procedures requiring angular approaches not possible with the human hand, and at one tenth the scale using instruments the size of a pencil. The movements of these endoscopic wristed instruments are also filtered through the computerized operating system of the da vinci platform eliminating hand tremors to allow better movement precision. This enables the surgeon to complete procedures within the female abdominal and pelvic cavities that would otherwise not be possible. Such procedures may also be performed without a formal incision, using an umbilical "belly button" incision instead. In most cases, the gynecologic procedures performed with robotic laparoscopy may be completed as an outpatient, with the patient often going home the same day as the surgery.
