The Bay Model

The exact replica of the San Francisco Bay and Delta was built between 1957 and 1969. It was used for many decades (until its being decommissioned as a research tool in 2000) to study water flow and hydrologic issues in the bay. The Bay Model is built to to 1:1000 scale horizontally but to 1:100 scale vertically. It operates on a time scale of about 1:100. While the exact bathymetry of the model now differs from reality over much of the bay, the approximation is still good enough to yield useful results. The Bay Model was used for various salinity intrusion, pollution, and hydrology studies overs the course of its research lifespan. The Bay model is free to the public and opened Tuesday through Saturday.
