When pain began to disrupt Dallas Thornton’s regular exercise routine, he knew something wasn’t right. His doctor diagnosed him with an inguinal hernia – a surgery that traditionally requires extensive healing and recovery. However, Thornton’s surgeon at Samaritan Healthcare, Dr. Andrea Matson, told him that robotic-assisted surgery was a much more effective option. Hernias are an organ or tissue that bulges from an opening in the surrounding muscle or tissue. Typically found in the groin or abdominal wall, hernias can be quite painful and impact activity, and usually require surgery. She explained that the da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgical System would allow Thornton’s body to heal faster with a lower chance of infection. The surgeon is always in control of the procedure, guiding each movement of the robotic arms to remove the hernia. The system filters out normal human irregularities, allowing the surgeon to complete much finer movements than with a human hand alone. Dr. Matson said that what used to be a large incision with scarring and days spent in the hospital could now be completed in as little as 30 minutes, with most patients returning to work in as few as three days. To say Thornton was surprised is an understatement. With only a few tiny scars – and not a five-inch incision – Thornton only took pain medication for two days. Within three weeks, Thornton was back to his regular active life, and after six weeks, he was back in the gym. That’s the power of the da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Surgical System, and it’s available right here, at Samaritan Healthcare. All of us, for each of you, every time.
