Italy has always felt like the land of winding streets and hidden little lives to me, and Venice even more so. It’s incredible to walk through a place that truly feels like a world of its own within a country. A city at the mercy of water, where time is shaped by the tides, and we are merely passing through. There is something melancholic, magical, and perhaps even unsettling in this slow disappearance. The way water gradually eats away at the neglected wooden pillars beneath the city gives Venice a fragile, haunting beauty. Rowing through the city during the 2024 Vogalonga was a special privilege for me. Seeing Venice from water level is a completely different experience. Watching the relentless work of water just centimeters from the foundations of the houses makes everything feel strikingly real. Although they don’t appear in this video, anyone visiting Venice should absolutely take the time to see Murano and especially Burano. Their magical atmosphere left a deep impression on me as well. About the Vogalonga: The Vogalonga is a non-competitive rowing event held annually in Venice. It was created to celebrate traditional, human-powered boats and to protest motorized traffic in the lagoon. The route is approximately 30 kilometers long and winds through the Venetian lagoon, canals, and historic waterways. Thousands of rowers from all over the world take part each year, offering a rare opportunity to experience Venice in near silence, broken only by the sound of oars touching the water. #Venice #Vogalonga #ItalyTravel #CityAtTheMercyOfWater #RowingVenice #SlowTravel #HiddenVenice #MelancholicBeauty #WaterAndTime #TravelStories
