Important safety test to do with gas mask filters. Get a piece of white paper and shake an open filter over the paper. If dust of any sort leaks from the filter then it is not safe to use. When you inhale through the filter this same dust will enter your lungs. Inhaling any filter medium is hazardous to health, but far more so if the filter contains asbestos or chromium. An in-date sealed filter should not need this test carried out on it unless the filter has been dropped or damaged. I'd advise using this mostly for surplus filters past their expiration date, while the filter may still work it is important to check that the last layer of material that holds the filter medium inside is in good condition to prevent inhaling the filter medium. You can also look at the top layer to see if it appears charcoal is seeping through this layer, if the layer is stained then there is a good chance the filter may be unsafe for use. Filters that are shown in this video are the Finnish M61 60mm NATO filter, Polish ABEK GOST filter, and Soviet GP-5 GOST filter.
