This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In a compelling talk, Rhodri shows why individuals and companies in the City of London would benefit from rediscovering a broader sense of purpose. Taking us on a journey through the History of the City of London, from the philanthropists of the 19th century to today’s social enterprises and responsible business initiatives, Rhodri reminds us that the City has been about a lot more than just making money and that it can be again. Rhodri Davies leads the Giving Thought policy programme at the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a registered charity that promotes charitable giving and provides financial services and social finance to not-for-profit organisations. An Oxford University graduate with a first-class degree in Mathematics & Philosophy, Rhodri spent 2 years as a Research Fellow at the think-tank Policy Exchange, where he authored a number of reports on philanthropy, including a major study on philanthropy in the City of London. After taking a year to put some of these ideas from his research into practice while volunteering overseas, he joined CAF in 2010 and has worked on a wide range of policy issues, helping to shape thinking on the role of philanthropy and the charity sector in the UK and worldwide. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
