The Ambae community is the custodian of a wealth of ICH including Sand Drawing inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Since the eruption of the Manaro Voui Volcano in the Ambae Island in September 2017, the Ambae community have to live under the precarious condition both on the Ambae Island and on the nearby islands as a second home. UNESCO launched a project “Disaster Needs Assessment of the ICH belonging to the Ambae Community” in October 2018 with funding under the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund. Following the training in November 2018, the fieldworkers and experts at the NGO Further Arts conducted the field researches on the impact of disasters on the Ambae ICH on Maewo and Santo Islands. The final consultation in February 2019 will bring together the Vanuatu Culture Centre's fieldworkers, NGOs, the community leaders, and the National Disaster Management Office to examine the findings of the field researches and develop a safeguarding plan for the ICH belonging to the Ambae community.
