Operation Overlord — The Battle of Long Khanh

The Battle of Long Khanh would see Diggers from 1 ATF become involved in one of the final major clashes involving Australian troops in the Vietnam War. Soldiers from the Royal Australian Regiment, 3rd Cavalry Regiment and 1st Armoured Regiment as well as US forces from the 1st Air Cavalry Division would become engaged in a complex operation in dense jungles and thick rubber plantations that would lead to 3RAR and Centurion tanks of the 1st Armoured Regiment being involved in an 8 hour firefight. Later the Australian forces would suffer their single worst ambush of the entire conflict. Military Medals awarded to the Diggers would include the Military Medal, Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Cross. Involved in this action would be the Diggers from 3RAR a battalion that had previously fought at Coral Balmoral as well as numerous other operations in prior tours of duty.
