Mulberry, Worth, Cross, Orange, and Little Water streets made up the original corners, or points, of the now famous and almost unimaginable slum of Five Points. The most dangerous area in New York City for decades. "The Points" was so lawless that as it was being torn down, and renamed, the City of New York would build buildings such as One Police Plaza (or One PP as they say in "Law and Order") as well as courts and civic buildings to further stamp the city's authority over the area. By the time of the War for Independence the original feature of the land, Collect Pond, was polluted and had to be drained via a canal into the Hudson. This is how Canal Street got its name. The buildings that were built on the former swamp land were not stable and didn't smell all that sweet and the seeds for a slum had been planted. With cheap housing available immigrants flocked to the area. By the 1920s most of the notorious slum was gone and very few bit of the Five Points are visible today.
