GZT Special Content Editor Sinan Bakioğlu and Istanbul Kültür University International Relations Department Head Prof. Dr. Çağla Gül Yesevi discussed the issue of migration from Turkestan (Central Asia) to abroad. Turkestanis, who faced various difficulties in Russia during both the Tsarist and Bolshevik periods, made partial migrations to Turkish territory during the late Ottoman period, early Republic and World War II until 1950. Three separate settlement laws were enacted in the Republican Period in 1923, 1926 and 1934, determining the migration policies of the new Republic of Turkey. In these laws, where the emphasis on "Turkishness" draws attention, the placement of immigrants to be accepted into the country was prioritized according to their place of origin, status and affiliation. Many concepts such as migration, immigrant, diaspora, refugee, homeland and seasonal migration should be examined within a theoretical perspective. When examining migrations from Turkestan (Central Asia), importance is given to the 19th century. The reason for this is that the region was subject to Russian occupation in this century. This naturally reveals that the most important factor triggering migrations was the Russian occupation. It is known that those who migrated from Turkestan kept their culture and traditions alive by using the associations they established and the magazines and newspapers they published in the places they migrated to. To which regions and countries did the people who left Central Asia (Turkestan) migrate? How were they able to preserve their cultures in the places they went? Why are the populations of the countries here low today? Why were the Slavic populations settled in the place of those who migrated? You can watch our content for all these and related questions. 00:00 Introduction 01:19 Why is there migration from Turkestan (Central Asia)? 03:23 What historical events triggered migration from the region? 08:35 Why are the populations of the countries in the region low today? 10:27 Is elimination or displacement preferred in population movements? 11:37 Was there a difference in perspective on the region between the Soviet and Tsarist periods? 14:15 How do those who migrated from the region live with their own identities in different countries? note: Our AI-generated voiceovers aim to emulate the original speaker but may not fully capture language nuances or intricacies despite our efforts for accuracy and quality.
