Welcome to Gwalia – a ghost town born from gold and abandoned time, and the final stop on our astro road trip. With storms rolling in, this was our last chance to shoot the night sky, and the sleep deprivation was definitely starting to show. In this episode, we explore the abandoned cottages, the old pub and even a “sly grog” shop to find interesting foregrounds for the Milky Way. But there’s a twist: an active mine site, museum lights and streetlights are throwing out a huge amount of light pollution, washing out the core and forcing a complete rethink of the plan. Instead of giving up, we lean into the conditions and scout compositions around old buildings in the ghost town while trying to work out how to deal with heavy light pollution when the Milky Way has almost no detail We get creative and look at some light painting and timelapses and I try to capture stars through a window in an old sly grog shop Along the way, you’ll also hear a bit of history about Gwalia and its connection to a young Herbert Hoover, long before he became the 31st president of the United States.
