Delaney Cross had been a forest ranger for eleven years before she accepted a posting so remote that the nearest town was a two hour drive down a mountain road that turned to mud every time it rained. She took it without hesitation because she had her reasons for wanting to disappear. The reports started coming in during her third week. Campers calling the station with voices tight and strange describing a man sitting at their campfire in the middle of the night. Old man. Dark coat. White hair. Never speaking. Never moving. Just staring into the flames. Every caller said the same thing without being prompted and not one of them could explain why they went back to sleep instead of running. Delaney filed the first report as a nuisance complaint but then the second came in and the third and seven more after that spread across forty miles of wilderness all describing the same man down to the wool coat. She started pinning locations on the map above her desk and when she stepped back she felt the air leave the room. The sightings formed a perfect circle around a section of forest with no trails and no reason for anyone to be near it. She pulled records then. Missing persons and incident reports going back twenty years. The campers who saw the figure all came out different. Disoriented. Missing time. One man did not speak for three days. One woman has not been right since. One hiker never came out at all. Delaney hiked into the center of that circle and found something there and radioed it in and got no response and turned around and realized something was already behind her. She made it back. That time. But she went back out deliberately and alone and at 3am she woke up to a fire she had not lit and he was there across the flames still and silent and for the first time she understood what he was trying to tell her. Then something stepped out of the tree line behind him that made every report she had ever read feel like a warning she had already missed.
