Prayer to Ward Off Misfortune Caused by Gossip It is believed that when people speak about you, whether in a positive or negative light, it can lead to misfortune. This includes conversations held in your presence or behind your back, particularly when events, good or bad, are linked to you. The belief is that such discussions can attract negative outcomes. Religions often incorporate such beliefs, and one story from Buddhist teachings exemplifies this. In it, a beautiful, naturally formed rock stood outside a family’s house. Visitors admired the rock’s beauty, offering praise whenever they came by. However, over time, the rock cracked in two. It’s said that the gossip surrounding the rock became so heavy, it was too much for the stone to bear. This story illustrates how gossip, even when it’s good, can bring misfortune. In life, it’s common to see that when something good happens, it is often followed by a streak of misfortune, especially for public figures or wealthy individuals who are constantly under scrutiny. Perhaps this is why our ancestors advised us not to become overly joyful in public when something good happens, but instead, to remain content and peaceful within. This prayer is intended to shield you from such misfortunes. It features Guru Rinpoche, who converses with Mikha— a formless demon created from public gossip—and commands it to travel far away to an empty land, never to return for at least 360 days.
