In other words, a fracture is a broken bone. Most fractures are caused by traumatic events. Some bone fractures are classified as closed fractures, in which damage to soft tissues is minimal. Closed fractures are often invisible to the naked eye. Open fractures are those in which the overlying skin is damaged by the broken bone. The broken bone can often be seen in the wound. Closed fractures can be considered non-displaced. This means the broken bone fragments have remained in proper alignment. In displaced fractures, the parts of the broken bone are displaced in relation to one another. Depending on the severity of damage to the bone, fractures can be considered incomplete fractures, in which the broken bone fragments are partially joined to each other. In a complete fracture, the bone fragments are separated. In comminuted fractures, the bone breaks into several parts. Fractures are also classified according to location. The most common fracture sites in young adults are the wrists and ankles. Hip fractures often occur in the elderly.
