Dr Randy Morris MD-The BOARD CERTIFIED fertility expert discusses irregular periods when trying to conceive. **Trying to conceive with irregular periods** Periods are said to be regular if they come every 28 to 30 days. They are said to be irregular if they are shorter or longer than that. Women who have irregular periods are often found to not be ovulating or maybe ovulating infrequently or irregularly. In either case, it can be more difficult to get pregnant. They to getting women with irregular periods pregnant is to get them ovulating. There are a few different ways to do that. The best way is to identify the reason why ovulation is not happening and fix it. There are many types of problems which can interfere with ovulation that are fixable. For example, when the thyroid is underactive or overactive, that will interfere with ovulation. Medication can be given to correct either situation. Another type of problem is caused when the pituitary gland produces too much of a hormone called prolactin. This can also be controlled with medication and result in ovulation and pregnancy. There are many more examples, so you should complete an anovulation panel with your fertility specialist. Sometimes, however, the cause for an ovulation problem can’t be found or can;t be fixed. In that situation, fertility medications can be used to produce ovulation. Fertility medications are divided up into two categories: oral medications and injections. Oral medications such as Clomid or Letrozole are easy to use and inexpensive but not as effective as injectable fertility medications. Injections, such as Follistim or Gonal F will get more women to ovulate and more of them will get pregnant but there is a big downside - there is a much higher risk for multiple pregnancy.
