Parti Pribumi Malaysia, PPBM chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that he is willing to be investigated in relation to losses on foreign currency transactions, by Bank Negara Malaysia, BNM in the 1990s. The former prime minister said, however, he had not yet been called by any party regarding the issue. In February, the Cabinet had agreed to set up a Special Task Force, led by former Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan, to conduct a preliminary investigation on the losses, which allegedly amounted to US$ 10 billion. The Prime Minister's Department in a statement on the matter said, the government's actions demonstrated its commitment and integrity, to ensure that investigation was carried out impartially. The matter was brought to light by former BNM assistant governor Datuk Abdul Murad Khalid, who claimed the central bank’s losses were much more than the reported RM 9 billion, in its 1994 annual report. The Special Task Force is expected to present its final report, and recommendations to the government in June.
