Montagu Pass is a historic mountain pass in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is one of the oldest, still drivable passes in the country and is located near the town of George, connecting it to the Little Karoo via the Outeniqua Mountains. The pass was built by convict labor under the supervision of Henry Fancourt White, an experienced road engineer. It officially opened in 1848 and remained the main route between George and the interior until the construction of Outeniqua Pass in 1951. Current Status & Attractions Still open to traffic but recommended for 4x4 vehicles or high-clearance cars due to its gravel surface. Offers breathtaking views of the Outeniqua Mountains, lush vegetation, and remnants of the old stonework. Popular with hikers, cyclists, and history enthusiasts. Recognized as a National Monument for its historical significance.
