Working of Megger

A Megger is an electrical instrument used to measure the insulation resistance of electrical equipment such as cables, motors, and transformers. It works by applying a high DC voltage (usually 250 V, 500 V, or 1000 V) to the insulation under test using a hand-driven generator or an internal electronic circuit. When the voltage is applied, a small leakage current flows through the insulation. The Megger measures this current and, based on Ohm’s law, indicates the insulation resistance value. Good insulation offers very high resistance, so the leakage current is very small, resulting in a high Megger reading. Poor or damaged insulation allows more leakage current, giving a low resistance reading. Thus, the Megger helps in assessing the condition of insulation and ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical systems.
