https://healthykidneyinc.com/ Swelling in your ankles with kidney disease is a common issue faced among many people with kidney issues. Once you’re in stage 3 of kidney disease or later, you’re going to see this issue arise more often. Kidney disease can cause foot and ankle swelling as when your kidneys don’t work properly, excess fluid can build up in your body. This is also commonly known as Edema. In this video, Robert discusses 3 effective ways to improve the swelling. The first thing you want to do is to reduce the sodium from your diet. Try to get all the salt out of your diet as much as possible. Although 2200 mg of sodium is the recommendation for kidney disease, you should opt to keep it lower to 1500 mg per day or less to reduce the swelling. The second thing is you may not be noticing is excessive loss of protein in your urine. This causes your protein levels in your body, specifically your albumin levels to drop. Albumin helps keep fluid in your bloodstream so it doesn't leak into other tissues. When these levels drop, you don’t have adequate protein in your body which regulates the fluid balance. To correct this, you can moderately eat more protein. Another approach to correct this issue is using essential amino acids or ketoanalogues of essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are precursors to protein. They’re the building blocks to protein. By taking these, you’re going to receive all the protein you need to reduce the selling without stressing the kidneys too much. This also helps correct the albumin levels. The third piece of advice to reduce swelling in your ankles from kidney disease is to avoid staying put for long periods of time. Especially if you have a desk job, you want to make sure that you get up and move every hour for a couple of minutes. When you sit for long periods, the swelling will build up more and more. If you have CKD and a desk job, Robert suggests moving around for one minute for every hour that you sit down.
