How To Winter Prune Wisteria, Pruning Wisteria, How To Train Wisteria Tools Required Secateurs, String/Twine, Steps/ladders if required. Firstly make sure that the secateurs are clean and sharp. Look to use Bypass rather than anvil secateurs for a cleaner cut. Take a few moments to visually assess the plant and visualise how you wish to train it. As with all pruning, begin by removing any dead, diseased or damaged plant stems. Look at the stem colour to identify dead stems. Dead stems will have a washed out, faded, look and the buds will appear withered. If in doubt then use your nail to lightly scrap the surface of the stem. If underneath the surface is green then the stem is alive. If brown then that section of stem is dead. During Summer pruning the majority of long stems are cut back by half. Where long, strong, stems are to be used for developing the framework then they should be retained and not cut back. During Winter pruning pruning occurs in January or February, before signs of growth and bud break. Try to avoid pruning during periods of heavy frosts or snow so as to avoid potential bacterial infections or cell damage through cold. With Winter pruning we look to cut back further those stems that were pruned back in the Summer. Winter pruning requires stems to be cut down to 3-5 buds or approximately 3”, 10cm, in length. It is these short stems, spurs, that will provide the ripened wood that necessary for flowering. Using string or twine tie in the stems to create a tidy, open, framework. If Wisteria stems are tied to create soft m’ and w’ shapes along the framework then more flower will be produced than if stems are allowed to grow straight up or as straight horizontal lines. There is need to apply fertiliser to the plant during the dormant Winter period but provide a balanced feed in April. Many thanks for watching my video.
