Saul is in a perilous situation. Like always, he turns to his own instincts to find a way out. He’s filled with fear because it all rides on him. He’s spent his life not listening to God and using God for his own desires. As a result, God has rejected Saul. So Saul has worked to maintain his kingship. But now, with all his men dead and being surrounded by the enemy, Saul’s best option is to simply escape the worst scenario - shame and torture by the enemy. So, he kills himself. For Saul, this was a kind of salvation. He could no longer get God to save him, so he saved himself. Saul never understood that salvation wasn’t a thing, it was in God. To reject God was to reject salvation. In the end, he gained neither God nor salvation. He dies alone having lost everything and perhaps never fully realizing it. Why did this happen? Because Saul wanted to be his own kind of king. In the end, he only gets to be king of himself and nothing else. Text: 1 Samuel 31 Like & subscribe to stay updated with the latest content!
