Safe drinking water does more than quench thirst. It also keeps children safe from waterborne diseases and helps keep girls in school. Two years ago, with donor support, UNICEF installed a solar-powered water system and borehole for a community of more than 30,000 in Ethiopia's Amhara Region. The impact "is beyond our expectation," says UNICEF WASH Officer Bezawit Demisse. Girls like 15-year-old Edime no longer have to miss class to make the long trek to fetch their family's daily water supply. She's in school every day now; working towards fulfilling her dream of becoming a doctor. Before the new water system was installed, Etenesh Tinsae and her family had no access to safe water. "The dirty water got my girl sick and she could have died," says Tinsae. "But now, thanks to God, the water is available in our village, my daughter is fine and she is attending school." More support is needed. Ten-year-old Mulusew still wakes early every morning to walk to a distant water point and fill a heavy 20-liter jerry can for her family. "Because of that, I have a pain in my back," Mulusew says. "I wish that I could have clean water nearby so that I could concentrate on my education."
