www.vintageswampcoolers.com www.ecophagefabrication.com www.etsy.com/shop/EcophageProducts Hi there, I'm Chris from Ecophage Fabrication and Vintageswampcoolers.com. I've been restoring and building vintage cars for decades and today we're going to talk about my favorite and arguably the most misunderstood vintage car accessory, the swamp cooler! In my years of restoring and building swamp coolers, I've learned there's almost as many misconceptions about this device as there are people who understand these and how they work. Misunderstanding swamp coolers can be hazardous. Swamp coolers are an air conditioner, but instead of using Freon, a refrigerant, they use water and cool through evaporative cooling. This works because the cooler is filled with water, a fiber mesh gets wettened and wicks up the water. As air is forced through the cooler during travel it absorbs the moisture in the pad. As it does so the energy in the air is used up and pulled from the air causing a temperature drop. (Think of it like this, the hot say 100 degree air say has 100units of energy in the form of heat, after passing though the cooler and using that energy to evaporate "boil" water off its energy mathematically MUST be less energy ALWAYS. UNLESS the air is already saturated with water before entering the cooler. Less energy will ALWAYS translate to cooler air temperature, Its Science!) No ice water is required and in fact will inhibit the evaporation needed for evaporative cooling. (Evaporation is the key! Would ice water boil faster? No) During humid days the coolers become less efficient, during this time ice water may be more beneficial than prohibitive though. The pads can be replace and should be often as they are prone to breakdown and require thorough drying out after use. The modern poly pads are much more forgiving about fiber shedding, breakdown and dry out. I've been building and remanufacturing these coolers for years. I've got many parts for these coolers and I'm happy to fabricate anything I don't have with out added expense. So head on over to www.vintageswampcoolers.com & get yours now! (obviously we get a bit backed up in the summer months also, fyi, still usually ship in 7-10 days) Let me know what you think in the comment below, I'm happy to answer questions, like the video and subscribe for more.
