Daimler Buses Unveils eCitaro with NMC4 Batteries | Mercedes-Benz eCitaro 2026

Daimler Buses has unveiled the new Mercedes-Benz eCitaro with its fourth-generation NMC battery. The company says that all variants of the eCitaro will receive these batteries from 2026. The new-generation NMC batteries will be on display at the UITP Summit 2025 in Hamburg from 15 to 18 June. That week, they will only be available in a two-door solo demo bus, but crucially, they will be available next year in both the long and short versions of the eCitaro G and eCitaro K. The new NMC battery packs have a capacity of 111 kWh, i.e. a higher energy density with the same battery size. This should enable range improvements of up to 500 km for the solo model and 400 km for the articulated model. Currently, the maximum charging power is set at 150 kW, but Daimler Buses has stated that this will be increased to 300 kW in the future. In addition, the NMC4 battery generation will have a ‘very long service life’, although Daimler Buses did not specify exactly how long. Readers may recall that the current generation NMC3 battery was first introduced by Daimler Buses in September 2022. It was based on cylindrical cells in the 21700 format (21 mm diameter, 70 mm length), where 600 cells are installed per module and nine modules are mounted per single pack. This translates into an energy content of around 98 kWh per pack. In the current 12 m long eCitaro solo bus, up to six packs (i.e. 588 kWh) can be installed; in the 18 m long articulated version, seven (686 kWh). This translates into a range of around 400 km for the electric solo and 300 km for the articulated bus, which you can compare with the NMC4 figures in the table below. The current NMC3 packages are assembled at Akasol in Hesse, Germany. However, from 2026 onwards, the NMC4 packages will be assembled in Poland by the local subsidiary of BMZ Holding, which has entered into a strategic partnership with Daimler Buses to expand production at its plant in Gliwice.
