Is silicone a good replacement for plastics in cooking utensils and Tupperware? While fairly inert at room temperature, silicon can release volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) when heated. These compounds can be absorbed and enter cells in our bodies. Most researchers currently believe that these compounds are not as dangerous as chemicals released from plastics. However, we do not have long-term studies of exposure to these compounds. Therefore I would caution people using silicone compounds in food preparation when heating is involved. For storage purposes and cold forms for example for making Popsicles, I think silicone is most likely safe to use. Whenever possible, it is best to use stainless steel, ceramic, or wood when preparing and especially heating food. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/... https://link.springer.com/article/10....
