In this series I'll explore different kinds of "Citizen Soldiers," starting here with the British "Fencible" regiments! Coming from the word "Defencible," these were regular army troops who were enlisted for brief time periods of particular danger (rather than the often 20+ years of regular service) and who were only expected to serve in the home islands in case of invasion. The Royal Navy also had a much shorter lived "Sea Fencible" service along similar lines!
