The first Moomba parade took place in 1955 on the Labour Day public holiday in March, which commemorated the advent of the eight-hour working day, which was first won in 1856. The last Labour Day parade was in 1951 and the Moomba Day Parade was declared as the public holiday. The Moomba Parade has been cancelled twice in its history: once in 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and once in 2024 due to an extreme heatwave. The 2021 cancellation also led to the cancellation of other Moomba Festival events like the Birdman Rally and Moomba Masters. In 2024, the Moomba Parade was cancelled to ensure the health and safety of participants and spectators due to the forecast of extremely hot weather.
