Supreme Court On Bengal SIR: '250 Officers, 50 Lakh Claims' SC's Big Action To Help EC In Bengal SC allowed judicial officers from Odisha and Jharkhand to be deployed for West Bengal’s SIR process. Move taken due to insufficient number of judges in West Bengal to decide claims in time-bound manner. Court also permitted Civil Judges of Senior and Junior Division with minimum 3 years’ experience for SIR work. Earlier order had restricted deployment to District Judges and Additional District Judges, serving or retired. Decision follows court’s observation of 'trust deficit' between West Bengal govt and Election Commission. Chief Justice referred to Calcutta High Court letter dated February 22 highlighting workload concerns. Around 50 lakh cases of logical discrepancy and unmapped categories need adjudication. Only 250 judicial officers currently available to handle SIR claims and objections.
