The Return O Johnny Munn by Liam Logan Author, journalist and broadcaster Liam Logan is a North Antrim native and a speaker of Ulster Scots. His poem ‘The Return O John Munn’, is an engaging and original piece delivered in a light-hearted and entertaining style. It tells the story of deceased sheep-farmer John Munn whose corpse appears to come alive at his own wake. The poem is a comic reflection on the customs and conventions of the traditional Ulster-Scots way of death and is delivered in a comic lyrical style which is accessible to all. The poem first featured in the author’s book ‘Nine Rhymes’ and has won the Finn Valley Ulster Scots poetry prize. Liam Logan was born in Ballymoney, Co Antrim and grew up in Galdanagh, a townland outside Dunloy. He has referred to the area of North Antrim he grew up in as ‘the hame o the Hamely Tongue’. A native Ulster-Scots speaker and an enthusiastic promoter of Ulster-Scots, he sees the tradition as an integral part of our shared linguistic and cultural heritage. The author has been broadcasting in Ulster-Scots for some 17 years for BBC Radio Ulster (A Kist o Words), BBC NI television and Fuse FM community radio station. He has written for the Ulster Scots newspaper, The Ulster Scot, and has authored three books about and in the medium of Ulster Scots – ‘A Word of Ulster Scots’, and ‘Thon Ulster Scots Book’ (both prose); and poetry, ‘Nine Rhymes’. Liam is involved with a number of television and film projects and continues to make programmes for a number of television companies including NVTV - Northern Visions Community Television and a number of local independent production companies. He is a presence on social media and has followers across the world. The Return O Johnny Munn is part of a week-long programme of new digital content in Ulster-Scots by Derry City & Strabane District Council, in partnership with the Ulster-Scots Agency, for Ulster-Scots Language Week 2021. The digital content includes poetry, drama, and storytelling and uses creative approaches to celebrate and promote the Ulster-Scots language.
