PART 1: • VOLTRON 1984 AND NOW - Defender of the Uni... * Voltron: Legendary Defender is a reboot of a show from 1984 called Voltron: Defender of the Universe. It's gets a little more complicated than that though. Voltron: Defender of the Universe is just a Westernized version of a anime called Beast King GoLion along with a few parts from another unrelated anime called Armoured Fleet Dairugger XV. GoLion and Dairugger had to be censored in order to show to children in the U.S. 80s' Voltron has had many iterations, but it wasn't until Legendary Defender that Beast King GoLion got another chance. Voltron: Legendary Defender takes elements from both Defender of the Universe and GoLion. It manages to pay homage and respect its origins while still keeping the story and characters fresh, interesting and new. Legendary Defender sure does have references to its counterparts and a lot of similarities though. And we are going to look at a few throughout these Now and Then Voltron videos. Like in the current version of Voltron, in GoLion Prince Lotor was half Altean. The only difference is his mother. In Legendary Defender Honerva is his mother. In GoLion she was related to him, but she was his grandmother instead. Meaning that she was Daibazaal's (Zarkon's) mother! In Defender of the Universe Haggar had some romantic ties to Zarkon... at least they weren't related in this version. Their shortly mentioned romance continued on into Legendary Defender. So Haggar is still Zarkon's love interest, and still related to Lotor. Daibazaal was Zarkon's name in GoLion, it ended up becoming his home planet's name in Legendary Defender. Honerva was Haggar's name in GoLion, that too ended up reappearing in Legendary Defender. The helmet Lotor wore in the original was put on baby Princess Allura. Kova made his return in VLD too. Lotor used to be extremely romantically interested in Allura. This is no longer the case, but his former interest in her was referenced. The same goes for Keith and Allura.
