Western chess players were perceived as mere amateurs in comparison. But of course, this hegemony couldn't last forever. Then, in the 1960s, two world-class super-grandmasters emerged simultaneously on the Western chess scene. The Soviet chess machine was right to fear the arrival of Bent Larsen and Bobby Fischer, who had emerged from nowhere. From the early 1960s, the USSR expected Larsen to soon challenge the Soviet champion for the chess crown. And while Fischer showed himself to be psychologically unstable, Larsen grew inexorably throughout the decade. For years, Larsen challenged Soviet grandmasters, regularly defeating them and winning international tournaments. Unlike other Western chess players, Larsen wasn't afraid of the Soviets. It's therefore not surprising that in the match of the century between the USSR and World Teams, Larsen demanded the first board. After all, he already considered himself the number one Western chess player and the next world champion. So, World Champion Spassky accepted the challenge of the ambitious Dane. But will Larsen himself regret it?
