The Isumi Railway (いすみ鉄道) and the Kominato Railway (小湊鐵道) lines together cross the Boso Peninsular between Goi on the Tokyo Bay side and Ohara on the Pacific side of Chiba Prefecture. Although the two lines meet at Kazusanakano there is no working connection between the two lines. Isumi Railway is the shorter of the two lines (26.8km) and was originally the JNR / JR Kihara Line as the original intention was to connect with Kisarazu by joining with the what is now the JR Kururi Line. Although JR East took over the line at the time of the JNR privatisation it was soon after transferred to the third sector company Isumi Tetsudo. Kominato Railway is a private railway and it was originally planned to traverse the Boso Peninsular between Kominato on the Pacific side to Goi on the Tokyo Bay side, however like the Isumi Tetsudo line this was never achieved and now runs a total length of 39.1km from Goi to Kazusanakano. Both railway lines are non electrified and use a mixture of DMUs that were either specifically built for the railways or are second hand. The Kominato Tetsudo fleet is made up of KiHa200s that are around 50 years old, although the company has recently acquired some JNR KiHa40s from JR East. The company also has a diesel powered replica steam locomotive that is used to operate tourist trains. Isumi Tetsudo has a number of different DMUs including some that are no longer in active service. In its fleet there is KiHa52 and KiHa28 types acquired from JR west that are used on weekend / holiday express services and a KiHa30 DMU from JR East's Kururi Line.
