Flygt: A History of Wastewater Pumping Innovation

Since producing our first pump in 1930, Flygt has consistently innovated to meet evolving wastewater challenges, extend product life, simplify maintenance, and save customers on operating costs. In 1956, Flygt revolutionized the industry by introducing the world’s first submersible wastewater pump with an automatic discharge connection, significantly reducing pump station size and costs while making service more straightforward. In 1996, Flygt integrated that groundbreaking P-installation method into a sump with optimized geometry to create the world’s first prefabricated, self-cleaning pump station -- the Flygt TOP station. One of the best-known Flygt innovations is Flygt N-technology, the world’s first self-cleaning, non-clog impeller design. The N-impeller marked a paradigm shift in clog-free pumping, where throughlet size was no longer the measure of clog resistance and pumps could deliver sustained high efficiency. Introduced in 1997, N-technology has proven itself time and time again in modern wastewater plagued with high volumes of artificial fibers. With the Adaptive N impeller, Flygt continued to evolve N-technology to improve its self-cleaning characteristics for small pumps. Today, the Adaptive N impeller is available both in our traditional centrifugal pumps and in Flygt Concertor, the world’s first wastewater pump with integrated intelligence. And of course, no submersible pump could operate without effective seals. That’s why Flygt has dedicated an entire portion of its R&D facility to sealing technology. Two of the highlights to come out of this lab are the Flygt Plug-in seal, which integrated an inner and outer mechanical seal with the pump for the closed loop cooling system, and the zero-leakage Flygt Active Seal technology.
