R3 = DX Sweet _______________________________________ Emile Mercurius emigrated to New Zealand from Lithuania in 1952, at the age of seven, the youngest son in a family of eleven children. His father, who had been conscripted by the invading German army in WW2, was a watchmaker by trade and his mother had been a milliner before being saddled with an almost permanent pregnancy and subsequent role of homemaker. Mercurius completed his schooling in Auckland and then attended university in Christchurch, where he failed to gain a degree in his chosen subject (Art) so he then found employment in the NZ forest service near Milford Sound as a ranger, ultimately specialising in the life and habits of the flightless Kiwi, which he studied for almost thirty-three years. During this time he developed an interest in music and learned to play the pan-pipes, the flute and subsequently the piano-accordion. Upon his retirement in 2012 he added to his musical instrument expertise with the purchase of a Yamaha keyboard, which he plays reasonably adequately, and today he may be heard annoying his neighbours at all hours, much to their horror.
